Google Maps with a SharePoint List

There is a point in one’s Web Dev. life when a map of data is needed. Since I’m a SharePoint guy, I thought why not make one that feeds off of a SharePoint list? I did just this with a SharePoint list of Nuclear Power Plants in the US.

The map changes information based on location information. My map changes based on the URL parameters, but yours can changed based on a link that is clicked, or some other “refresh map” action.

Let me show you whats what.

Taking a Breather

The Bartow County Social Club (BCSC) website is finally done. Over all, I’m pretty happy with how it has turned out. Working with the BCSC group left me with the impression that they liked my work as well. It’s a good feeling.

I recently got back from my winter vacation and had a great time. Recharging really does help, plus, I really like snow. I took up snowboarding for the first time last year, but this year I got more involved. Having my vacation after the end of this project seemed like good timing. It let me give myself a little pat on the back AND this project helped pay for part of my funs.

I digress; I did take away a lot from this project that helped round me out as a developer and a designer. I learned some things towards the end of the project that I never really thought of in the beginning. Basically one of those “If I knew what I know now” situations. I always like to have some time to have a few take-aways with my projects from work at INPO or my side projects. A glimpse of what I’ve learned:

Web Part Property Pane “OK Cancel Apply” Buttons Display Issue

When creating a Master Page for your SharePoint site, you need to add the placeholder for your future or current Page Layouts. Most people use the Minimal Master Page that can be found throughout the internet, some from Microsoft and from others who have made their own.

The problem with a lot of the popular Minimal Master Pages is that they do not have ALL of the needed parts. Specifically the proper way to include the Page Layout place holder.

If you use the minimal code along with your valid CSS/HTML you may find that your Web Part property page cutting off from the bottom when in Edit Mode of your publishing page. The “OK Cancel Apply” bottom row will seem to disappear.
